A Pinot Weekend in the Willamette Valley
Oregon's Willamette Valley makes Pinot Noir that goes bottle-for-bottle with Burgundy, in a setting that still feels like farm country. It's an hour from Portland and a world away — and it's best done as a weekend, not a sprint.
The two-day shape
- Day one: Dundee Hills. The red volcanic soils that made the valley's name. Three tastings, lunch in Dundee, sunset from a hilltop estate.
- Day two: McMinnville & Carlton. Smaller producers, the best small-town main street in Oregon wine, and a slower pace home.
When to go
Harvest (September–October) is the spectacle. But winter is the secret: tasting rooms are quiet, fires are lit, and the winemaker is often the one pouring. Bring a coat; skip the crowds.
