A pioneering Seneca Lake estate where meticulous farming and indigenous-yeast winemaking define some of America's most respected Riesling.
Founded in 1979 by German-born viticulturist Hermann J. Wiemer, the vineyard helped pioneer serious Riesling in the Finger Lakes and is now led by Fred Merwarth. It is widely regarded as one of the region's flagship estates, known for dry Riesling, an on-site grapevine nursery, and biodynamic farming.
Set along the western shore of Seneca Lake, the estate pairs working vineyards and a nursery with an unhurried tasting experience. Visitors can book educational seated tastings or enjoy self-guided flights and wines by the glass, alongside an Open Doors event series and guided farm tours.
Educational seated tastings showcase the estate's dry Rieslings and indigenous-yeast wines, while preset self-guided flights and wines by the glass welcome more spontaneous visits; reservations are recommended for the guided experience.
Worth knowing: Praised by Wine & Spirits as making some of the best Riesling in the United States, and recognized as one of the region's indisputable flagship estates.
