Rick Small and Darcey Fugman-Small started Woodward Canyon in 1981, making it the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley. The Smalls helped win federal approval of the valley's appellation, and the winery built its name on age-worthy cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay.
The tasting room sits in a converted farmhouse along Old Highway 12 in Lowden, with a front porch and backyard garden open to picnics. The mood is unpretentious and first-come, first-served.
A seated flight samples the estate's cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and Old Vines bottlings, with charcuterie and a picnic-friendly garden; walk-ins are welcome and reservations are appreciated for larger parties.
